As someone who is not a fan of science fiction films or literature, I strangely always find myself drawn to fashion which has been inspired by the genre. Anything with a galaxy or space print and my little eyes twinkle themselves like stars!
I was recently sent the lookbook of Andrew Majtenyi's Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection, entitled 'Labyrinth'. As one might expect from such a name, the theme is futuristic and sci-fi inspired. Digital prints encase highly sculptured, architectural pieces and textures such as quilting, add an almost three dimensional element to his collection.
He apprenticed under Vincenzo Cardone, learning 19th and 20th century tailoring, whilst Madame Sophie, the image consultant, taught him advanced draping techniques. Andrew went on to hone his couture skills while working with the National Ballet of Canada, under Oscar nominated and Tony award winner, Santo Loquasto. These theatrical influences are seen in the cut, fit and finishing of each piece. Andrew also designs for the film and television industry and has worked on numerous productions, including The Sentinel.
