Talking to an audience of extremely fashion savvy girls and boys, I doubt I need to extoll the virtues of Martin Margiela to you.
While, I'm sure, most of us own few, if any, pieces from this Belgian designer, we are all most likely aware of of him and his incredible work. And the incredible cost. Of course, the label is no longer designed by the man himself, but the design ethos remains reasonably strong.
There are many lines under the Margiela name - MM1 being the pret-a-porter line for women, with MM10 being the menswear. These lines are the Margiela style we know and love; conceptual yet beautifully understated, like the man himself.
The details which make Margiela clothes so special are almost stealth in their lack of visibility. Instead, he always opted for hidden or extremely understated quirks, right down to the label.
But, as I said, none of this comes cheap. However, I am really loving the slightly less expensive line MM6's SS12 collection. It feels fresh yet timeless with nods to the simplicity of the mainline collection.
Whilst it is a spring/summer collection, I think any of these pieces could be worn year round with suitable layering.
