Edinburgh based accessories label Rene Walrus Atelier is a labour of love for fine art graduate, Janet McCrorie.
Combining her obsession with couture embroidery techniques and love for surrealism, Rene Walrus Atelier creates beautifully elaborate yet quirky accessories. Janet certainly has an eye for detail with each piece lovingly adorned with jewels or panels of bright colour. Each piece is made as a limited edition and hand-finished with lavish materials, all in Scotland.
For this SS12 collection inspiration is drawn from a diverse range of subjects, from South American traditional dress to Souxsie Sioux, resulting in an explosion of colour and encrusted with Swarovski elements.
Janet graduated with a Master Of Fine Art from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000 and set up her bridal accessories label, Rene Walrus, in 2004.
For the last couple of years she's been collaborating with stylists and photographers to create bespoke pieces, which are were very editorial and aesthetically different to her bridal range. This led her to decide, in 2011, to set up Rene Walrus Atelier, where she could "unleash my creativity and combine my knowledge of accessory manufacture, love for high-fashion and art background to create a collection of limited edition couture accessories".
Janet's accessories are not for wallflowers admittedly, and some are only editorial worthy, in reality, but I certainly applaud her humour and fervour, and the fact she moved away so dramatically from her very traditional bridal range. It was a bold move, but one which certainly worked as it's a breath of fresh air.
