I have written before about Manila based label Proud Race for their simplicity of silhouette. Each season this small, independent label produce beautifully minimal yet exceptionally versatile pieces.
For me, their SS12 collection signifies a more grown up Proud Race as the cuts somehow feel more elegant, more understated but never losing their edge. The collection is entirely black yet it never looks overwhelming or even too sombre, inspite of the fact it could be considered somewhat dark for a spring collection. In each collection the label do hark back to their youth and the cultural references of that time, and this is no different. Music is clearly important to the designers as it infuses each collection, ever so subtly but it's definitely present.
"a curiosity with the uniform dressing of various religious groups, memories of house of style ,the supermodels and our love for teenage youth. All of these are presented subtly in silhouettes of throwback skater classics but still staying true to the labels minimalist aesthetic. We created our own world for our Spring Summer 2012 collection. A cult to represent everything that we believed in and loved from our youth combined with our modern observations now."
I love the mix of solid and sheer, as you might expect, and the long, flowing dresses and skirts are simultaneously demure and tough.
I'm not a fan of tailored shorts at all, yet Proud Race have managed to make them cool. The buttoned up black cotton shirts really take me back to my own gothy youth and has immediately made me want one again.
Overall, I absolutely love this collection and can see so many pieces sitting perfectly within my own warbrobe.
