My love of visual drama and sartorial theatre is the reason behind the masks and feathered headdresses I collect. Fashion is nothing without frivolity, escapism and imagination. Practicality of course counts immensely, and is the core of most of our wardobes, but it's the little frivilous details and additions that make dressing up a game, an adventure and even a challenge - to see if there is a way to make those frivolities workable in 'real life'.
For all these reasons I am attracted to drama in clothes. When Marion from Bitching & Junkfood told me about her designer friend, Rachel Freire, I knew I would be shown something glorious. And glorious it is.
Rachel has a BA in Theatre design from Central St Martens and has worked as a costume designer for the likes of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Roundhouse Theatre. Drama courses through Rachels veins and her work exemplifies this. This is her last collection: filled with the most luscious leather ruffles, garters and corsets; a combination of futurism and historical costume.
Her forthcoming SS10 collection is inspired by "heroines, warriors, rock-stars and army girls", created "as a capsule wardrobe for real-life Supergirls" - words which chime sweetly in my ears! I can't wait to see it.
