I recently experienced a bit of a revelation. One which I know many ladies have yet to experience, but I heartily recommend. It's something it took me 36 years to try but now that I have I can't believe I went this long without having done it.
What is this immense experience of which I speak? Getting properly measured for a bra.
That's correct. I got measured for a bra and what a shocking revelation. I have mentioned many times on here that underwear really isn't of much interest to me. I like it simple and probably a bit perfunctory. It serves a purpose and little more. Bra's especially held no interest as no matter what kind I wore they always seemed uncomfortable and dug into me in some way, shape or form. Stupidly, it never occurred to me that I might be wearing the wrong sized bra. Uh, duh!
Most women are apparently shoving their girls into the wrong sized cups. It was courtsey of Boudiche in Glasgow my own revelation happened. I quite confidently told the lovely young lady what bra size I was and she took one look at me, fully clothed, and told me I was talking nonsense. Excuse me? She whisked me into the changing room and gave me a bra in the size I thought I was. I put on the bra and seemed to fill out the necessary bits. When she came to check, she instantly told me my bra was all wrong. With an eagle eye, and after sticking two fingers down the back of the bra, she knowingly went away and came back with several different bras to try on. I was told to try them without looking at the size. I did as I was told and couldn't believe the difference. Not only did nothing dig, nothing bulged, nothing nipped (excuse the pun), but my waist appeared smaller and my shoulders no longer felt like they were carrying some uneccessary weight!
I was quite simply astounded. As it turns out what I assumed were little, fried egg sized A cups were actually charmingly "full" C or D cups, depending on which brand I wore! I also went down a back size! Well colour me shocked!
The difference in comfort levels is simply amazing. But not only that, I actually find myself rather interested in procuring attractive bras now, as I see them as another way to explore fashion. Sadly, my back and cup size isn't quite regular therefore a quick potter around my usual haunts for underwear no longer wields results, so it seems I will need to cough up a bit more dough to keep the girls in the comfort I have been denying them all these years.
I urge all you ladies who have not been properly measured to do so. Go forth and let the girls live the life they deserve!
Fabulous bras courtesy of the admittedly rather ridiculously priced Kiki de Monparnasse.
Great for layering over American Apparels sheer bra
A more reasonably priced selection of bras from Gilda & Pearl
Sadly, neither of these shops sell my non-regular size either! But a girl can look.
