They say familiarity breeds contempt. People, things, places, nothing is immune. If pressed I would maybe concede that familiarity can breed complacency rather than contempt. We all have different boredom and attention thresholds. I have a pretty low boredom threshold. I love things for a very long time without ever growing bored. Food, faces, clothes - the longer I know them, the more I love them. Some people may want to discard something when it starts to look worn or tatty, but very often that is when I start to love it even more. It starts to look like something that has a had a life. Something that has had adventures.
Today when I was hanging up my favourite vintage sequin jacket I noticed that some of the colour is starting to fade on the shoulder...
But when I looked closer, I realised there was something I had never noticed before. I have always loved the very defined shoulderline of the jacket...
I had always presumed it was just the shoulderpad, but when I turned the jacket inside out, there was a surprise waiting there. A splendid sculptural surprise...
There is also a very rigid tulle construction that sits proud of the shoulderpad.
It is so so lovely, it almost wants me want to wear my jacket inside out.
Take another look at something you love today.
There may be a surprise waiting for you too!

Ahhh the Drag Queen cast off you bought last year! I bet that jacket has seen some adventures and lots of Shirley Bassey renditions!

Oh, wow! Well there's an idea that could be copied quite easily! Did it really come to you from a drag-queen? I can well imagine! x

Yup, I love those little surprises vintage clothing can give you when you look at their construction!

The color scheme and everything (kind of a Mardi-Gras feel) are very similar to a vintage vest we found:

Both must be from the 80s, but I wonder what made those particular colors so popular.

Oooh, sequins! What does the whole thing look like?
Posted by: Isabel | Monday, 13 July 2009 at 21:54
haha. i love that you love that! i make clothes for a living, and although they didn't teach me that here at parsons in new york, that was a trick that my teachers in bunka fashion college in tokyo taught us!! tulle holds amazing shape, just like it does in a crinoline. that's what holds up a lot of cute puff sleeves too! take a look the next time and you'll see little pillows of folded tulle in them, especially well-made (ie non-mass market) ones.
ps: i love sequins and have kept my eye on the lookout for a vintage super crazy jacket for the longest time, alas i can never afford them when i do find them. so i have to contend myself with sequin harem pants! hehe. wish they were way more colourful though!
