See, now our out-of-place hot weather has given way to the more usual torrential rain I can start thinking about fashion that doesn't involve keeping me cool. I can think once more about layered fabrics, ornate and unusual structural silhouettes, restriction and restraint. All the good things.
Johannesburg born Alexander Koutny, who graduated with an MA at Central St Martins, is now into his fourth season and crikey, he just seems to get better each time. After moving from South Africa to London he clearly absorbed the London aura of creativity before heading to New York.
His latest collection, Displaysia, has a touch of New York chic to it but with the rebelliousness of London.
Strangely though, his previous collection, Monolithia, is actually darker and heavier in spite of it being for the spring/summer season. I like how he seems not be defined by the seasons and sticks to his own creative process and vision.
Volume plays a huge part in Koutny's work, with billowing fabric and layers of loose folds intertwined with padded elements to lend his work a deeper, more three dimensional appearance.
Oh how I love this dress with foam cubes!
I appreciate his ability to layer just a little - enough to add my much loved texture without taking it to extremes, thus keeping the silhouette sleek and structured.

He's been my favourite designer for so long! I love how he uses structure and volume to create completely contrasting pieces that still seem cohesive.

I LOVE the slouchy wedges on the last picture, it looks like her one-piece sock/shoes have fallen down.
She doesn't care, though, cos she's got a great dress. And MASSIVE hair!
