When good wedges go bad...

It was a quiet Easter holiday weekend and the Clergie wedges were relaxing at home

You're very quiet today, is there anything wrong?
Don't be silly, I'm fine, stop fussing
*growing more suspicious by the second*
Look me in the eye right now and tell me exactly what the hell is going on...

Dsc03532

I don't know how to tell you this, but I've met someone else and we're in love

Who is she? where did you meet her?
You don't know her, she's not from around here
Oh hold on! you're not talking about that cheap cut out patent leather tramp are you
Don't you dare call her a tramp, she's not cheap she's $495

Rcsho2001212867_prod_zoom_back

The next day...

The Gucci platforms have been phoning all day and are starting to get worried. They go straight round to the Wedges house and are just in time to stop her doing something stupid

What in the name of God do you think you're doing! get your head out of that oven
I can't believe this is happening, we were so happy
Oh wake up and smell the leather honey, he's a two timing slimebag

Dsc03538

What will I do now?
Take him for everything he's worth honey and make sure you keep the house

Door

And the moral of the tale is- just remember there are plenty more wedges in the shoeboxes of life

The End.

NOM*D - for mic and me

Rare is the label that can offer both Queen Michelle and I something special.
NOM*D from New Zealand is one of the few.

2008 is an exciting year for NOM D with it now celebrating it's 21st birthday and a show coming up in September for London Fashion Week. Previously this label has been known for creating the 'New Zealand Look' with it's dark and deconstructed aesthetic and it's layering of fabrics including boiled wools, sheers and re-worked vintage garments.

For me,blissful layers of black upon black upon black

For Queen Michelle, draped and delicious

Mother of God! it's the Maxi...

Watch out kids, here comes the Maxi dress* again.
Will the buyers never learn.
This can only end one way! badly...
Whether cheapy cheap cheap, middle of the road or high end, these dresses are all destined for the same place - THE SALE RAIL!!!! Truth to tell, clearance racks up and down the land are still clogged with the last tragic attempt to push this on us.
You might flirt with the idea when you see it in the magazine, but in real life it is a total non starter. The main reason is simple - that dress will always be wearing you...
Foul little number from French Connection £50

Mathew Williamson wipeout, £1450

Cu

So while the magazines, fashion editors and shops all say-

Above all this season’s floaty and feminine maxi dress provides freedom of movement and is glamorous and easy-to-wear. It is likely to prove this season's biggest fashion statement.

I'll say -
make sure you give the maxi a miss...

Queen Marie

* The maxi dress should not be confused with the vintage hostess gown ( of which I have many), which can be worn at home in the style of Margo Lebeter in The Good Life as you serve your guests another martini bianco with a knowing look and an arch smile...

A fine romance...

On this Easter Sunday, let's start with some little things that are as sweet as chocolate but a lot less fattening from the lovely Helpless Romantic

Let's go fly a kite (£18)

The key to your heart (£20)

Oh Karl! now I understand...

I have often wondered about the reaction Karl Lagerfeld had to Hedi Slimane and that slimline shilouette. The reaction must have been pretty extreme for him to have the strength of purpose neccessary to so radically alter his own bodyshape to enable him to wear those clothes.
But now! now I think I understand...

The charming Stephanie from Haynes wrote to us about C.r.a.f.t. Denim

C.r.a.f.t was founded by Michael Kopplstatter, previously with Helmut
Lang. Michael co-designed with Helmut Lang for 20 years before creating
C.r.a.f.t with the ex head designer for Paul Smith, Gideon day.
Inspired by the natural and laid back aesthetic of the girls prominent
in the rock n roll scene of the sixties and seventies such as Uschi
Obermayer, C.r.a.f.t. utilises excellent craftsmanship across a range
of both contemporary and vintage styles and washes. This includes the
classic tailored 'Gainsbourg' which was so popular with Helmut Lang, and
the baggy boyfriend fit 'Major Tom' and many many others.

Oh holy crap!  I have never seen jeans that make me want to lose two stone*, dye my hair black, start smoking, drinking and doing dirty things with bad boys, until now...

By the light of the silvery moon...

When I retire to the Royal Bedchamber of an evening, before I can fall asleep, I need the room to be cool and dark.  Very dark. Blackout dark.
Last night I had a pretty restless sleep thanks to the silvery moon.
The moon is very high in the sky just now, very very bright and shines right in my bedroom window. I am always astonished at just how bright that silvery light can be.
I wonder if moonlight inspired Faliero Sarti to make this verena scarf...

Product2883_alt3

Product2883_large

I love this scarf but unless it is made of moonbeams, I cannot for the life of me understand how it can cost $345. As much as I love its shiny loveliness, Queen Michelle will love this...

Product2560_large

Product2560_alt3

This twill pleated shrug from doo.ri is reduced from $695 to $420

If like your Queens you are fiscally challenged at the moment, steer clear of Jake, but if you have found a big bag of money, get yourself over there at once for some serious temptation.

Time To Play

As I have said many times before I am pretty willing to try most things, in sartorial terms. I am old enough now to completely understand what suits my body size and shape and move comfortably within those realms. Of course I rarely venture out in stuff that blatantly doesn't flatter me, as I have never seen the point of wearing clothes that don't flatter the wearer, since the clothes then automatically overwhelm the person. But there are some things that I think I could probably carry off reasonably well, but feel that my age gets in the way somewhat. Yes, I am considerate of my age when I dress. Whilst I perhaps don't look like an average (almost) 35 year old, I still don't want to look like a teenager stuck in a grown woman's body.

When you get older you won't necessarily make a conscientious decision that you suddenly can't wear something. It's just a natural evolution of style. Queen Marie and I have discussed this many times. She personally doesn't wear short sleeved t-shirts anymore. I don't see why she won't, but since style evolution is a very personal thing, she no longer feels happy in short sleeves.

I can't exactly pinpoint quite yet what items I definitely won't wear, but I know there are things which hover on the perimeters of my comfort zone. Playsuits being one. Whilst I have no fear of the jumpsuit and own and wear several, the playsuit is something I struggle with. I struggle because I actually love them but feel they are suited for someone much younger than myself. Yet, I still hanker for one.

Well, I lost my battle yesterday and caved in and bought one. It was one of those situations where I knew that if I didn't try it I would always wonder. At least this way if I get it and hate it then that's the end of that and if it rocks then I know it's territory I can wander happily into, thus opening up my fashion realm a little wider.

After much pondering and debating as to which style to go for, I opted for a loose but tailored PPQ one from Oli. The shorts are reasonably long but I can put elastic through the hem if I wanted a more bloomer-like effect (which I nearly always do!).

PpqplaysuitWith some great heels and thick black opaque tights I think this playsuit will work with my body and my age. It would of course look insanely fabulous with the Carvela stripper heels, but let's not go there shall we...or shall we??

Being Bettie

The other weekend I nearly snapped up an unworn vintage swimming suit from the 50's. It was actually a two-piece suit which was green with huge pastel pink spots all over it. It was utterly divine. Unfortunately it was much too big for me. I would have worn the top as a top and I would have worn the bottoms under my Miu Miu inspired skirt, since they were actually quite bloomer-like. They would have looked super with thick black tights. I didn't buy it because it would have broken my heart having it sit there unable to be worn.

I have had an obsession with vintage underwear for the longest time. I hunted for many, many years for a vintage boned corset but couldn't find one that wasn't  falling apart. And all the underwear I came across just didn't fit my small frame. I'll fess up, I like big, old fashioned nude coloured foundation garments, so favoured by ladies during 50's.

Bettiepage

I think it all harks back to my love of Bettie Page. The original pin-up girl who rocked with world with her notorious nude and bondage photo's during the 50's. Much more than just a 'glamour' model, as judged by today's standards, Bettie questioned, although without realising it, what it was to be a woman and forced the prudish and puritanical American public to see that a woman can be provocative, intelligent and in control. She was deemed so outrageous and in violation of so many sexual taboos that the United States Senate Committee invoked an investigation in pornography. Thousands of her photographs were burned. Yet the image of Bettie Page with her thick black bangs has become iconic and her style is now synonymous with burlesque ( for better or worse depending on your opinion).

Even though Bettie is revered among fetishists, I think she has a much less subversive image than is often portrayed. Yes, she did bondage shots with Irving Klaw, which for the time was boundary pushing, but even then she was ultimately just acting the part. I much prefer to think of Bettie Page as simply a woman ahead of her time. Who just happened to like being naked!

So she has much to do with my love of vintage lingerie. Bullet bra's, girdles, all the garments that by todays standards are rather far removed from being sexy. Obviously buying vintage lingerie has it's down sides, mostly that someone else has worn it. So luckily fashion seems to be loving vintage style underwear too as models were seen prancing around in their not-so-skimpy skimpies during the SS07 shows.

Foundations_1

Foundations_2

Foundations_3

Richard Nicholl showed huge pants under his sheer skirts and Alessandro Dell'Acqua similarly had vintage style undergarments on display. Luella opted for high waisted shorts which reminded me of early photo's of a young Marilyn Monroe, when she was just Norma Jean.

Should I manage to find a suitable 50's corset/bustier I do plan to wear it as outerwear over t-shirts and fine knit sweaters. However there are some great sites that do vintage style lingerie, such as What Katie Did and La Magia, which could of course be utilised for this purpose, and being new you haven't got the ick factor of wearing someone else's underwear, even if it is just a girdle or corset.

Foundations_4

"I never kept up with the fashions. I believed in wearing what I thought looked good on me." Well said Bettie.

Shoe Eye Candy

How many of you have admired Marios Schwab's collection of shoes for Scorah Pattullo? Yeah, me too. Well if you have a few hundred quid burning a hole in your pocket, they are being sold online right now.

Caving Into Carvela

Carvelaplatforms I admit it. I like a stripper shoe. Hi, my name is Queen Michelle and I like stripper shoes. There I said it. The one thing that stops me from caving in to full on stripper shoes is that they usually come with a stiletto heel, and I really can't do stiletto's - Glasgow pavements are not thin heel friendly. But sometimes there comes along a shoe that I may have to make an exception for, and in this case it's in the form of a satin and leather platform by Carvela.

I have stalked this shoe at Kurt Geiger for quite some time and always resisted. It's 5" inch skinny heel would be a dangerous impulse to give into to....on many levels. Yet today, of all days where I nearly choked upon discovering my bank balance is currently at £6.47 with still over a week til payday, I have decided that I will probably buy them.

I can only hope I am rescued by Queen Marie who will talk me down from such a ridiculous purchase, that will most likely never see the light of day. In my head however I see them with a pretty white dress, which I don't yet own, and some thick navy tights.

Join The Commuun

Commuun was founded in 2005 by Kaito Hori and Iku Furudate and has since shown at Paris Fashion Week and won the esteemed LVMH award and Longchamp award for ANDAM (The Association Nationale pour Développement des Arts de la Mode) in 2007. For such a young label it has already received kudos with stores like Dover Street Market in London snapping it up. And no wonder - Commuun is a journey of simple shapes and strong, structural tailoring.

Commuun_1

Commuun_2

Commuun_3There is a level of crispness to their collections that continues from season to season which creates a strong identity and classic quality.

In plain terms - wouldn't you want to waft around in these clothes on a bright spring day? I surely would!

Uncomplicated Complex

As I have mentioned before, my favourite kinds of garments are those which can be worn with minimal fuss and effort because they themselves have enough detail to speak for themselves. Little quirks which make them not quite minimal yet still maintain a degree of unfussiness. It's for this very quality I love Clayton Evans' label Complex Geometries.

Complex_1

Complex_2

Complex_3

Complex_4

The clothes are reasonably simple yet have interesting details such as twists, knots, draping and asymmetry. Evans has taken the basic and humble t-shirt dress and forged it with some Grecian influences and the result is perfectly simple with a twist.

Queen Michelle

Size Matters

When I was a kid I was completely obsessed by doll houses. I avidly collected the most beautiful furniture to decorate my miniature home. Lamps that actually lit up, teeny metal pots and pans, floral sofa's and display cabinets which held perfectly formed miniature china plates. My doll house was my pride and joy.

Last year for my birthday Queen Marie bought me a doll house. Unfortunately I currently have no where to put it so it lies in it's box as yet unbuilt. One day though I shall have a home where I can erect the doll house and have it on display filled with beautiful little furniture.

It's for this reason things in miniature rather intrigue me. So I was really excited to find Miss Bibi. Her jewellery is an exploration of everyday objects made tiny and turned into necklaces, brooches, earrings and pins. I of course favour the little knives, saws and guns, which somehow seem all the more sinister when shrunk to such tiny proportions. Queen Marie would like the chandeliers, the chair, the book and the mirror.

Missbibi_1

Missbibi_2All are silver and/or gold plated, and for anyone with happy memories of their doll's houses then these are the perfect for you.
