When I saw the Jil Sander SS09 show I immediately fell in love with those hugely long fringes on the dresses. Neck to floor fringing is taking it to delicious new levels. Whilst I see the whole flapper reference, I actually really love the texture it creates, especially if you were to layer these dresses over sheer pieces and built up from there.
My brain started pondering after seeing the collection because I was sure I had something in my closet which had some pretty long fringes too. After much searching, I opened a suitcase of clothes that are in storage and low and behold there was a vintage 80's dress I'd bought last year and never wore. It was one of those "it's day will come" garments and now it's day had indeed come.
It has a single layer of fringe that goes from almost arse level to mid calf, but the actual bottom of the dress also goes to pretty much mid-calf so most of the effect of the fringing is lost. It also has some really naff batwing sleeves.
Naturally it was ripe for some alteration. I hacked off the sleeves and took the length of the dress shorter so the fringes would hang down and swoosh around my legs.
On a side note, I picked up this amazing waffly virgin wool shirt by Evelin Brandt in a charity shop for £3. It completely reminded me of the holey loveliness as showed by Rodarte in their leggings and Jeremy Laing in tops and dresses.
It actually works really well with the textures of the dress which is a bonus.
The dress really comes alive when you move and walk - all those fringes just swishing around!
