Miu Miu For Me Me
I completed my Miu Miu style project this weekend. Rather than a dress I opted for a separate top and skirt as I figured I'd get more wear out of a skirt than a dress on this occasion. The fabric was really great to work with and I am definitely going to create more skirts like this in some other delicious fabrics.
The neutrality of the colours means that I can also mix it up with bright colours too, but I was just too lazy to show any more outfits! I am really looking forward to some more girliness!
Queen Michelle

way way way CUTE!!!!
Good job on the project. Turned out really nice!

Love love love the fabric on you...but I fear on me, it would have the effect of adding too much bulk....

Love the idea, love the result...love your whole look....

Is this a joke? Can someone be this materialistic and pretentious? Go outside, go to the country where grass grows and it will be a weight off your shoulders that no one cares about your "look".
You obviously have heart for something, use it for good and purpose.

Charlie, this a FASHION blog. Has the penny dropped yet? A FASHION blog...so it's not about the "country" or the friggin' "grass" you fool.
And yes I AM this materialistic and pretentious - if you have a problem with that, then spend your time elsewhere and stop wasting mine.

love this! seriously. you have really wonderfully created this look at like a fraction (if that) of the cost. you look tremendous with the halter, t-shirt & silver leggings!

Oh wow! Michelle, this is perfection. The new girlie look is really working for you. That fabric looks super sumptuous.
Posted by: Dee | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 13:55
The top and skirt both look wonderful...and Charlie, even if no one cared about her 'look' (which isn't the case, going by the number of us turning up here to drool at the clothes), Queen Michelle would certainly care about it- which is the heart of true style, IMHO.

Wow, I was waiting to see what you did with that material and you did a gorgeous job!
You lucky thing, having the legs to make a skirt like that look fab!
Posted by: Elisabeth | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 14:30
Gorgeous!
Posted by: Jane | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 14:41
is it stretchy? I think the top and skirt together make an impeccable duo. Wear them together, this is just beautiful...
Posted by: Eli | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 15:11
you are perfect like this , i m so jealous plus you re gorgeous <3

Is it strange that we've never met yet I feel proud of you?! Great job on this, and way to keep you spirits up and be ever positive after a surely hard holiday season.
Making the top and skirt separate was a genius idea, so much more versatile!

Looks great!
Posted by: WendyB | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 16:27
I really like it! Looks great but I was wondering how did you get the skirt shape did you use a pattern or are you very talented and are able to work it all out yourself...I'm guessing with the amount of amazing garments you have created its the latter...
Thanks xxx

Posted by: owlpyjamas | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 18:03

ooo there's something so perfect about the pointy collar shirt under the square neckline, i'd never have thought of it, thanks miuccia! the dress looks beyond fab, it suits you so much! i love the puffed out skirt, you've again showed how making runway stuff should be done as it looks just as fab! you've mentioned how you made different skirt shapes before, which one was this one?
Posted by: selina | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 20:09
Thanks lovely ladies!
Well this skirt wasn't from a pattern (I still have a pathalogical fear of patterns so haven't attempted to even look at one yet!) and it was the simplest one I have made yet. You basically take a good mid weight fabric and make a very wide tube (I used 2 metres of fabric in total - then sewed the ends together). Sew a hem at the top, leaving a gap in the stitching, and thread some heavyweight elastic the size of your waist through the hem. This involves pushing 2 metres of fabric into a 25" (in my own case) width of elastic. Not as easy as you might think! But succeed and you get all this fabulous volume since the bottom of the skirt has nowhere to go but out the way! Obviously the longer the skirt the less the volume will be as the weight will pull it down, but keep it short and sweet and you get a tu-tu fit for a ballerina!

Just goooorgeous Michelle, well done. I actually prefer the look of your top and skirt to the Miu Miu ones, the slightly lower more defined waist is so elegant. You have delighted your subjects once more. xx

You are my fashion icon.

Ohhh I love how it turned out!! The fabric is really cute.
Posted by: Valerie | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 21:22
super fantastic! I love it, love it love. I think you're amazing. I've been oh so shy to comment until now!
Posted by: Tiffany | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 21:45
Thanks very much for taking the time to comment Tiffany - but please don't be shy in the future, your comments are more than welcome xx

I think you look superb, QM, so ignore Charlie Salt's comments.
Posted by: iopine | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 22:36
Wow! Can I ask where you purchased the fabric and what it is called? I am on the look out for something similar. The top is great, I also think a strapless dress with the same skirt would be fab worn over a peter pan colour top. I cannot belive that took you a weekend to make - it would of taken me a month!
Posted by: natty | Monday, 07 January 2008 at 22:57
That may be my dream skirt! Very Lacroix circa 87/88 darling! But hilariously, I used to make skirts EXACTLY like that when I was 15 & 15, and wore them cinched in with a wide elastic corset belt with a zip, black wool tights, clumpy back suede slip ons and a black polo neck. Ah the eighties... too much eating of late I fear to wear this style any more... you do look v pretty tho hon LLG xx

Did you add seaming to the top? It's a great outfit. Also, that commentator about being 'pretentious' should really look in the mirror.
Posted by: marchesa | Tuesday, 08 January 2008 at 02:45
This is perfect! I adore it separately and together. Could you possibly do a tutorial on how to sew something like this? Or anything at all, actually, I'm a complete sewing novice and would love to learn..
Posted by: Stephanie | Tuesday, 08 January 2008 at 03:36
Queen Michelle, My intent wasn't to offend, i'm sorry if I have done so. I just have never experienced anything quite like this. I am also in fashion and design, I guess my intentions are just a lot different.
Anyway, the comment about telling me to look in the mirror was amazing. Makes no sense.
Good luck with the blog and fashion and whatever you must do.

I have never posted a comment until now, however I just wanted to let you know that I absolutely love your blog. It's wonderful for many reasons (inspiring, clever, amazing clothes), but most of all you as a person really shines through. Thank-you & keep it up!

Brilliant! And the varied styling is just love.
Posted by: jd | Tuesday, 08 January 2008 at 11:14
bravo! i love the fabric and what you have created. you are my DIY inspiration -- like you, i'm completely untrained in using a sewing machine, but seeing how you are able to plug away at it, figure it out on your own and make such gorgeous pieces gives me motivation to go for it as well!

Why do u always look impeccably amazing??
Posted by: cordelia | Tuesday, 08 January 2008 at 23:48
Queen Michelle I love this project and think I might have to copy it. I hope you don't mind, but I promise to take some pictures (unless my results are crap. . . in that case it's never seeing the light of day).
Posted by: Aja | Wednesday, 09 January 2008 at 03:36
Thank you everyone for the kind words. This is such a simple project to create. The skirt only took about 1 hour.
Aja of course I don't mind - why would I? I am just glad that I can show that you don't have to have great sewing skills to make stuff, just patience. I'd love to see anyone's else's version too.

the outfit with the bustier over the grey tee is INSPIRED. honestly, thats the best outfit i've seen in some time. its going in my inspirational folder. :)
materialism? almost every one is guilty of a little materialism. you can tell he doesn't read this blog much, though: frequent readers would mention 'friendliness' or 'kindness' as one of your key personality traits much quicker than they would say 'materialistic.'

it is great, can I know what the fabric is called?
Posted by: nicole | Saturday, 16 February 2008 at 22:29
Nicole, I'm afraid I don't know what the fabric is actually called, but it's a curtain fabric. Brocade is probably the closest thing to it.
Posted by: Queen Michelle | Saturday, 16 February 2008 at 22:35
ohh my god! can you stop being so amazing already?!?! seriously, i cant even handle it! you've inspired me to take up sewing once again so i can recreate these miu miu looks for myself (also two of my faves from the collection!)
