Hands up - I have become consumed by obsession in finding the perfect leather dress. It seems everyone is doing one and pleasingly none of them have taken the traditional route of skintight.
We have M&S doing a very Jil Sander-esque slimline version; the H&M one which seems to exist nowhere (although since their childishly derogatory comments regarding blogs, I doubt I'd buy it now anyway); and of course Zara who currently have 2 styles, one of which also comes in grey (I have one of the black ones as shown here).
But truth be told, none of those are the vision of my perfect leather dress. You see, I reckon that a leather dress would be an absolute keeper for me, even when the trend for all things S&M has long since died down. In spite of my status as a dedicated dance music DJ, I am at heart a punk rock chick, so this kind of dress will last me forever.
The nicest one I have seen so far, is the Acne version. Beautifully modeled here in 2 completely different ways:
It's the perfect shape...and perfectly too expensive! So I have been thinking about having my own, bespoke leather dress made. I would regard this as an investment for me. The dress shapes I like have always pretty much stayed constant, even though I flirt with other silhouettes, I stay true to the gentle cocoon shape most of all.
I am currently in discussion with a bespoke tailor about having one made, especially since the Adidas Archduke had the most amazing leather bomber jacket created, and I think the tailor I've been emailing is the same one. I'm hoping this doesn't turn out to be too expensive (the AA's jacket ended up very reasonably priced indeed and I hope the dress will end up less than the cost of Acne one. Well it needs to be or else I shan't do it). I am quite excited about having my design made from scratch from someone who actually knows how to sew!
I suspect I'll take the Acne shape as a basis and change small details to fit my style a little more. If I am able to undertake this endeavour I shall be sure to do updates on the process of bespoke.
Queen Michelle

queen michelle, totally unrelated, but did you get anything from the preen for topshop collection that's currently up?
Posted by: Lauren | Friday, 14 September 2007 at 15:46
Funny you should ask that Lauren because I added the grey dress to my cart today, but then thought that I should keep the £100 to put towards this bespoke dress instead.
Plus I thought £110 was just a wee bit too much - it's still Topshop after all.

I know what you mean - I put the purple dress in my cart, and then I thought about the exchange rate, and exited the site. Oh well.

I've been eyeing up that Acne one as well...why, oh why, is it so expensive?
Posted by: Hebden | Friday, 14 September 2007 at 17:23
How much is the Acne dress? I've been noticing it all over.
Can't wait to see your bespoke creation!

I think it was about £500. I'm sure Browns had it.

Zara also does a short sleeveless dress all in leather fringe if you are interested in a party-ish look, although it was 330 CHF (around £150, I think?) which is also extreme for Zara.

i wanted to say something because obvs i feel the same way about leather but missed this post, the idea of having your own made sounds exquisite. i like the m&s and acne ones the best but the m&s seems to be the most affordable of the two... that i might think of picking up.

Has anyone seen the H&M leather dress in stores? I'm desperately looking for one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Luci | Saturday, 22 September 2007 at 17:26
My Dear Luci
Queen Michelle and I have come to the conclusion that the H&M dress is an urban myth. We have searched high and low for months and not a single sighting have we had!
