Shoulder The Burden

Since the strong silhouette is going to be very prominent (no pun intended) this season, big shoulders give a nod to the 80's and give structure where summer's floaty, tent dresses didn't.

I'm not ready to give up my loose dresses and I'm not ready to squish myself into a skin tight dress either (I would never be as cruel as to inflict that on the general population!), but shoulders I might be able to do.

Having spend time taking out the shoulder pads in 80's vintage, I'm glad I kept them because I think I'm going to be putting them back in again. Only this time I'm not putting them in the inside...I'm putting them on the outside.

Sparked by this amazing shot of the model wearing a Bruno Pieters bolero jacket (part of an amazing editorial) in Plastique, I shall be taking my shoulder pads and sewing them onto some t-shirts and tops.

Always a fan of volume in unusual places, this satisfies my curious need to add some superfluous size onto my frame. A bit Gary Glitter? Maybe. Renders wearing most jackets near impossible? Probably. Totally worth it to look awesome? Absolutely!

So watch this space for some shoulder pads being worn in strange places....

Check out Boudicca -

They have some beautiful, structured pieces with very large and pointy shoulders, indeed! I don't know much about the label, but their website is very strange and difficult to navigate. :P

Boudicca is one my most favourite labels of all time. Did a post on them last year. Impossible to get your hands on if you live where I do though, so I admire them from afar. http://kingdomofstyle.typepad.co.uk/my_weblog/2006/12/follow_boudicca.html

I'd never heard of them before stumbling across their show coverage on the Vogue forums! I don't think they're readily available where I live either (Australia). Darn it all.

I can't believe you saved all your shoulder pads!! As soon as I plucked them out of my thrift store jackets and blouses, I promptly tossed them away. I thought shoulder pads were a trend that would stay dead, but I wouldn't be entirely adverse to its resurrection.

And as for the codpiece in the Plastique picture... let's just say it's not for me.

yeah, I basically got this haircut the other day.........
